Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) – The East High School girls’ basketball coach was arrested Thursday and charged with sending child pornography.

Police said Matthew Gouveia, 35, of Webster, sent pornographic images of naked women’s anatomy to a 15-year-old victim.

Gouveia was working as the girls’ basketball coach at the time. The Rochester City School District (RCSD) said it immediately placed Gouveia on leave and suspended him from all duties at East High School when they learned about the allegations.

The Rochester Police Department worked with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force to make the arrest.

Gouveia was charged with six counts of second-degree disseminating indecent material to minors, one count of first-degree disseminating indecent material to minors, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Gouveia was arraigned Friday morning in City Court.

RCSD sent a letter home to all families who have children attending East High School. You can read the letter here.

The Rochester Police Department and the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office is asking anyone who may have had inappropriate contact with Gouveia to please contact 911.

Anyone with any additional information about this investigation should also call 911.
